And yet I digress (II)...

Instead of bringing me an apple, one of my freshman students brought me a bag with other edible plants--I would have said vegetables, but I am not sure that seaweed is technically a vegetable. She asked me how to say each one. They were, in order of inquiry:

1) Seaweed
2) Spinach
3) Cauliflower

This student actually asked (about the cauliflower), "This is a muffin, yes?" I then explained the difference between a head of cauliflower and a muffin. Somehow, though, my words were not enough of an explanation. I then used my creative talents to help elucidate the differences between a cauliflower and a muffin. Mostly, the explanation involved the key detail of what happens in an oven.
I suppose a cauliflower could go in the oven...

"Seven-starring-Brad-Pitt" is the name of one of my students. For the sake of simplicity for his Chinese peers, he goes by "Sven." Here is a wonderful conversation we had during our first class after winter break:

Seven-starring-Brad-Pitt: Elie, I would like you to meet my girlfriend.
Me: I would love to! Is she in our class.
Seven-starring-Brad-Pitt: No, but she will come after.
[After class dismisses, a mysterious female student creeps to the front of the class from the back door]
Seven-starring-Brad-Pitt: Elie, this is my girlfriend: "Madea's-Family-Reunion."
Me: What a pleasure.

Katherine: Elie, I want to change my name.
Me: Ok. What would you like to be called?
Katherine: Killer.

I am omitting this from my two lectures on Shakespeare:

I have successfully made my first batch of mocchi. Some of you may have known that this was a long-time coming. After mixing, baking, cooling, stuffing, wrapping, freezing, and thawing, I feel like a mad scientist with my delectable creations. I have eaten all ten of the strawberry mocchis, but I decided to make something special with the remaining mocchi dough. This will involve coffee Haagen-Dazs ice cream. I will provide details in a forthcoming "Confertzel."
